Bathroom & Kitchen Renovations and Asbestos

Many homes built prior to 1985 in Melbournecontain asbestos. Asbestos was a popular choice of building product to use because of it's fire & water resistance. What people didn't realize was the effect asbestos had on the human body.

Once asbestos fibres are released, they become airborne and can cause asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. The symptoms of this deadly disease do not usually appear for 20-30 years.

If your bathroom or kitchen does contain asbestos, there is no cause for alarm.  As long as it is stable and covered by paint or tiles, it can't harm you. Once you decide to renovate your kitchen or bathroom, asbestos can become a problem.  This is due to the fact the fibres can become airborne.

Before being able to undergo your new kitchen or bathroom renovation, you are legally required to hire a licensed asbestos removalist to undertake the removal of the asbestos.  The removalist will come into your home, tape up the doorway to prevent the dust leaving the room, bag up the asbestos and vacuum up all the dust, leaving your home asbestos free and safe. If you're unsure or suspect you might have asbestos in your bathroom or kitchen talk to your builder/renovator. They can arrange an asbestos test for you.
